Valorant's agents are divided into four roles: Duelists, Initiators, Controllers, and Sentinels. Each role serves a specific function in team compositions, and a balanced team typically includes at least one Controller and one Duelist, with the remaining slots filled based on map and strategy.
Duelists like Jett, Reyna, Raze, and Phoenix are designed to take fights and get opening kills. They have self-sufficient abilities for creating space and winning duels. Jett's dash and updraft give her exceptional mobility, while Reyna's dismiss lets her escape after getting a kill. Duelists are expected to entry frag β being first into a site on attack.
Controllers β Omen, Brimstone, Astra, Viper, Clove, and Harbor β control sightlines with smokes and area-denial abilities. Smokes block enemy vision and are essential for executing site takes safely. A team without a Controller will struggle to take sites against coordinated defenders. Brimstone is the most beginner-friendly Controller with simple point-and-click smokes.
Initiators such as Sova, Fade, Skye, Breach, KAY/O, and Gekko gather information and disrupt enemies before the team pushes. Their abilities reveal enemy positions, flash opponents, or stun them. Sentinels like Killjoy, Cypher, Sage, and Deadlock excel at holding sites and locking down flanks with traps, walls, and surveillance tools. For beginners, Sage offers simple healing and walling, Brimstone has straightforward smokes, and Phoenix provides a well-rounded introduction to dueling.
