Tarkov features multiple interconnected maps, each with distinct characteristics. Customs is the starter map with a mix of indoor and outdoor combat, multiple quest locations, and a linear layout that funnels players through chokepoints. Woods is a large, forested map favoring long-range engagements and sniper gameplay. Interchange is set in a massive shopping mall with close-quarters combat and valuable tech loot.

Shoreline features a large resort building with high-tier loot and intense PvP, surrounded by a more open lakeside area. Reserve is a military base with excellent loot density but difficult extractions. Labs is a high-risk, high-reward indoor map requiring a keycard to enter, populated by deadly AI Raiders who carry top-tier gear. Factory is the smallest map β€” a close-quarters bloodbath ideal for quick PvP action and certain quests. Streets of Tarkov and Ground Zero round out the map pool with urban combat environments.

Extraction is how you keep your loot. Each map has specific extraction points, some always available and others requiring conditions (keys, payment, cooperation with an enemy faction player). Always check your extraction points at the start of a raid by double-tapping the O key. Running out of time means you lose everything, so monitor the raid timer and plan your exit route.

Survival tactics matter enormously in Tarkov. Move carefully, listen for footsteps and gunshots, and use the lean mechanics to peek corners safely. Sound is directional and detailed β€” you can identify a player's position, movement speed, and even the surface they're walking on by audio alone. Use headsets (in-game items) to amplify environmental sounds. Heal injuries with specific medical items: bandages for bleeds, splints for fractures, painkillers for tremors, and surgical kits for destroyed limbs. Managing your health is as important as managing your ammunition.
