Getting StartedRocket League

Rocket League is a vehicular soccer game where rocket-powered cars hit a giant ball into the opposing team's goal. The concept is simple, but the skill ceiling is extraordinarily high, with professional players performing aerial maneuvers, precise dribbles, and coordinated passing plays that seem impossible to newcomers. The game is free-to-play and available on all major platforms with full cross-play support.

Start by completing the in-game tutorials, which teach basic movement, boosting, jumping, and ball hitting. Then spend time in Free Play mode β€” this is the most valuable training tool in Rocket League. In Free Play, you can chase the ball around the field indefinitely, practicing hitting it in different directions, at different speeds, and from different angles. Even professional players spend significant time in Free Play warming up.

Boost management is fundamental. Orange boost pads on the field give you 12 boost each, while the six large boost canisters in fixed positions give you 100. Don't constantly drive to the corner for full boost β€” learning to maintain momentum using small pads keeps you in better positions. Boost is used for speed, aerial control, and powerful shots, so running out at the wrong time can be devastating.

Camera settings matter more than you'd expect. Most competitive players use Ball Cam (camera locked to the ball) for the majority of play, toggling it off briefly when grabbing boost or dribbling. Adjust your camera distance, angle, and stiffness to find settings that give you good field awareness without feeling too far from the action. Look up professional player camera settings as a starting point and adjust from there. Avoid extremely close or extremely far settings as a beginner.
