Competitive (Ranked) is Rocket League's primary mode, available in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 formats. Each playlist has its own rank, ranging from Bronze through Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and Supersonic Legend. Most players consider 3v3 the standard competitive format, but 2v2 is equally popular and arguably the best mode for improving since you get more touches on the ball with fewer players.
1v1 is the most mentally demanding mode, with no teammates to fall back on. Every mistake leads directly to a goal. However, it's the best mode for improving fundamentals like boost management, challenging decisions, shadow defense, and shot accuracy. Many coaches recommend playing 1v1 regularly even if it's not your favorite mode, as the skills transfer directly to team formats.
Casual mode offers the same 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 formats without rank pressure. Players can join and leave mid-match, and the atmosphere is more relaxed. It's useful for warming up, practicing new mechanics in real games, or playing with friends of different skill levels. Extra modes include Rumble (random power-ups like grappling hooks and spikes), Hoops (basketball-style goals), Snow Day (hockey with a puck), and Dropshot (break the floor to score). These modes have their own ranked playlists.
Rocket League also features limited-time modes and events throughout the year. Tournament mode runs automated brackets throughout the day at various rank levels, offering special rewards for winning. Private matches let you set up custom games with friends, including mutator options to modify ball size, gravity, boost amount, and game speed. Training packs created by the community provide structured drills for specific skills like aerial shots, wall reads, backboard clears, and redirect practice.
