Overwatch 2 features several objective-based modes across its map pool. Escort maps require the attacking team to push a payload along a fixed path while defenders try to stop it. Control maps have both teams fight over a central objective point in a best-of-three format. Hybrid maps combine a point capture with a payload push. Push is the newest mode where both teams compete to push a robot toward the enemy base, with the team that pushes farther winning.
Flashpoint maps feature multiple capture points that activate sequentially, requiring teams to adapt their positioning as objectives shift. Clash is a tug-of-war mode where teams fight over a series of points, pushing the frontline toward the enemy's final objective. These varied modes keep gameplay fresh and reward different strategic approaches.
Competitive Play is the ranked experience, placing players into tiers from Bronze through Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Champion. You receive rank updates every five wins or fifteen losses, rather than after every match. Role Queue locks in the 1-2-2 composition and lets you earn separate ranks for each role. Open Queue removes role restrictions for more flexible team compositions.
Quick Play is the primary casual mode with the same rules as Competitive but without rank pressure. The Arcade section offers rotating modes like Mystery Heroes (random hero on each death), Total Mayhem (reduced cooldowns, increased health), No Limits (any composition), and seasonal events. Custom Game Browser lets players create lobbies with modified rules, and Workshop allows scripting entirely new game modes. Practice Range and AI matches help new players learn heroes and maps at their own pace.
