Survival mode is the default Minecraft experience. You gather resources, craft items, manage hunger, and face hostile mobs while exploring and building. Difficulty ranges from Peaceful (no hostile mobs, automatic health regeneration) through Easy, Normal, and Hard (stronger mobs, hunger can kill you). Hardcore mode is Survival on Hard difficulty with one life β€” death deletes the world, making every decision high-stakes.

Creative mode gives you unlimited resources, the ability to fly, and invulnerability. Every block and item is available in your inventory, and you can place or destroy blocks instantly. Creative mode is where ambitious builders construct massive projects β€” cities, pixel art, recreations of real-world landmarks, and complex redstone machines β€” without the constraints of resource gathering.

Multiplayer is where Minecraft truly shines for many players. Servers host communities with various gameplay styles: vanilla survival, modded adventures, minigames, and creative building worlds. Popular server types include SMP (Survival Multiplayer) for cooperative survival, Factions for PvP-focused territorial control, Skyblock for starting on a tiny island and expanding, and Minigame servers with modes like Bed Wars, Sky Wars, and Build Battle.

Adventure mode is designed for custom maps where players experience creator-designed content β€” puzzles, stories, and challenges using command blocks and data packs. Spectator mode lets you fly freely through the world and observe other players without interacting with anything. Minecraft also supports extensive modding through Java Edition, with modpacks adding new dimensions, creatures, magic systems, technology trees, and thousands of new items that essentially create entirely new games within the Minecraft framework.
