Guild Wars 2 has nine core professions divided into three armor classes. Heavy armor professions are Warrior (versatile melee fighter), Guardian (protective and bursty), and Revenant (channels legendary heroes). Medium armor professions include Ranger (nature magic and pets), Thief (stealth and burst damage), and Engineer (gadgets and kits). Light armor professions are Elementalist (four attunements of elemental magic), Mesmer (illusions and manipulation), and Necromancer (death magic and minions).
Each profession gains access to elite specializations through expansions, fundamentally changing how the profession plays. For example, Guardian can become a Dragonhunter (traps and longbow), Firebrand (support tomes), or Willbender (mobile melee). These elite specs often shift a profession's role β the Necromancer's Scourge spec becomes a powerful support, while the Ranger's Druid spec is the game's premier healer.
Builds in GW2 are defined by your trait lines (three active at once), weapons (each profession has multiple options), and utility skills. Trait lines offer major and minor traits that modify your abilities. The build system is flexible β you can swap traits, skills, and weapons freely outside of combat. This lets you adapt to different content without needing separate characters.
For beginners, Guardian offers strong damage and group support with an intuitive kit. Ranger is forgiving thanks to its pet drawing enemy aggro. Necromancer's Shroud mechanic provides a second health bar, making it very survivable. Community sites like Snow Crows (raids), Discretize (fractals), and MetaBattle (general) maintain optimized builds for every profession across all game modes. Start with a recommended build and adjust as you learn what works for your playstyle.
