Fortnite is a free-to-play battle royale game where up to 100 players compete to be the last one standing on a shrinking island. The game combines shooting mechanics with a unique building system that lets you construct walls, ramps, floors, and roofs using materials gathered from the environment. This building mechanic is what sets Fortnite apart from every other battle royale and is essential to master for competitive play.
When you drop from the Battle Bus, choose a landing spot that matches your confidence level. Named locations have more loot but attract more players. Quieter areas on the map edges give you time to loot safely and practice building. Harvest materials (wood, brick, metal) by hitting objects with your pickaxe β aim for the blue circle that appears for faster harvesting. Wood builds fastest, brick is a middle ground, and metal is strongest but builds slowly.
Chest spawns contain weapons, ammo, healing items, and materials. Weapons come in rarity tiers from common (gray) through uncommon (green), rare (blue), epic (purple), and legendary (orange). Higher rarity means better stats. Keep a balanced loadout: an assault rifle for medium range, a shotgun for close combat, a healing item, and a utility slot for mobility or explosives.
The storm (shrinking play zone) deals damage that increases each phase. Always be aware of the timer and storm location on your minimap. Getting caught in the storm is one of the most common beginner deaths. Zero Build mode removes the construction element entirely, relying instead on an overshield mechanic, and is an excellent starting point if building feels overwhelming. Many players prefer Zero Build for its more traditional shooter experience.
