Final Fantasy XIV is a story-driven MMORPG set in the world of Hydaelyn. Unlike many other online games, FFXIV places enormous emphasis on its Main Scenario Quest (MSQ), which must be progressed to unlock most features and areas. As a new player, your top priority should be following the MSQ β it's marked with a distinctive flame icon in your quest log and on the map.
Character creation lets you choose from several races, each purely cosmetic with no gameplay impact. You'll also select a starting class, which determines your beginning city: Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa, or Gridania. Don't worry too much about this choice β at level 10 you can unlock every other class on the same character simply by equipping a different weapon. This is one of FFXIV's best features: one character can be everything.
The early game can feel slow, especially through the A Realm Reborn content. Combat starts with only a few abilities and gradually adds complexity. Stick with it β the story and gameplay improve dramatically from Heavensward onward. Use the Hall of the Novice (unlocked around level 15) to learn your role basics and earn useful starter gear.
FFXIV has one of the friendliest MMO communities. Sprout icons appear next to new players' names, and veterans are generally patient in dungeons. Join a Free Company (guild) through the Community Finder for social connections and helpful buffs. The free trial includes the entire base game and first expansion with no time limit, making it easy to try before committing.
