FFXIV's content is gated behind the Main Scenario Quest, which serves as both the game's story and your progression path. Completing MSQ unlocks dungeons, trials, raids, and endgame zones. Dungeons are four-player instances (one tank, one healer, two DPS) with linear paths and multiple bosses. The Duty Finder automatically matches you with other players.
Trials are eight-player boss fights against iconic Final Fantasy summons like Ifrit, Titan, and Shiva. These come in Normal (story), Hard, and Extreme difficulties. Extreme trials are the entry point to serious endgame content and drop powerful weapons. Savage raids are eight-player encounters demanding precise execution, while Ultimate raids represent the absolute hardest content in the game, designed for the top percentile of players.
The Gold Saucer is FFXIV's entertainment hub, featuring Triple Triad (a card game), Chocobo Racing, mini-games, and the fashion report. Treasure maps lead groups on randomized dungeon adventures with rare loot. Island Sanctuary provides a relaxing solo farming and building experience separate from combat.
Crafting and gathering in FFXIV are full jobs with their own gear, rotations, and progression. Crafters include Carpenter, Blacksmith, Alchemist, Culinarian, and more. Gatherers harvest materials as Miner, Botanist, or Fisher. Housing is a highly sought-after feature with personal and Free Company plots in residential districts. The game also offers PvP through Crystalline Conflict (5v5) and Frontline (large-scale battlegrounds), along with deep glamour and cosmetic customization systems.
