Elder Scrolls Online is a massively multiplayer RPG set in the continent of Tamriel, the same world as Skyrim, Oblivion, and Morrowind but set a thousand years earlier. The game combines traditional Elder Scrolls exploration and storytelling with MMO mechanics including group dungeons, raids, and PvP. Every zone is level-scaled, meaning you can explore anywhere in Tamriel from the moment you start.
Character creation involves choosing an Alliance (Daggerfall Covenant, Aldmeri Dominion, or Ebonheart Pact), a Race, and a Class. Alliance matters primarily for PvP in Cyrodiil. Race provides minor stat bonuses β Dark Elves are versatile for magic builds, Orcs are strong for stamina builds, and Bretons excel at magicka efficiency. These differences are small enough that any race works for any role.
The game's questing is fully voice-acted and offers genuinely good storytelling, especially in the main story, guild questlines (Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood), and zone stories. Unlike many MMOs, ESO's quests feature meaningful choices that affect outcomes. Take time to enjoy the story content rather than rushing to endgame β the journey is the strongest part of ESO.
Progression works through both leveling (1-50) and the Champion Point system (post-50). As you level, invest skill points into your class abilities, weapon skills, armor passives, and guild skills. Skill points are abundant from leveling, skyshards (collect three for one skill point), and quest rewards. You can respec skills and attributes at any time for gold at shrines in major cities, so don't worry about making permanent mistakes with your build.
