Heroes and Roles in Dota 2

Dota 2 features over 120 heroes, each with four or more unique abilities. Heroes are categorized by their primary attribute: Strength heroes are typically durable front-liners, Agility heroes often deal physical damage and scale well, and Intelligence heroes usually cast powerful spells. However, these are loose guidelines β€” Dota allows enormous flexibility in how heroes are played.

The five positions in Dota 2 are numbered by farm priority. Position 1 (hard carry) farms the safe lane and becomes the team's primary damage dealer late game. Position 2 (mid) takes the solo mid lane, gaining levels quickly for an early power spike. Position 3 (offlaner) plays the hard lane and builds into an initiator or space-creator. Position 4 (soft support) roams and creates plays around the map. Position 5 (hard support) protects the carry, provides vision with wards, and sacrifices farm for the team.

For beginners, certain heroes teach fundamentals well. Wraith King (carry) has a simple kit with passive lifesteal and a second life. Sniper (mid) teaches positioning with his long range. Tidehunter (offlane) is tanky and has a game-changing ultimate. Crystal Maiden (support) has straightforward disables and a global mana aura that helps the entire team.

Unlike many games, Dota 2 heroes have extreme power spikes and troughs throughout a match. Some heroes dominate early but fall off, while others are weak for 30 minutes then become unstoppable. Understanding these timings and adjusting your aggression accordingly is a fundamental skill that develops over hundreds of games.
