Getting Started with Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is a sci-fi looter shooter that blends first-person shooting with RPG elements including classes, abilities, and extensive loot systems. You play as a Guardian β€” a resurrected warrior wielding the power of Light (and later Darkness) β€” defending humanity's last city against various alien threats. The game features both PvE and PvP content with a heavy emphasis on cooperative play.

Your first task is choosing one of three classes: Titan, Hunter, or Warlock. Each plays differently, but all three can use any weapon and participate in all content. After the introductory mission, you'll arrive at the Tower β€” the social hub where you collect bounties, manage gear, and access vendors. The Director (map screen) shows available destinations, activities, and quests.

Power level is the primary progression metric. Higher power gear drops from nearly every activity, and equipping it raises your overall power. You don't need to equip your highest power gear all the time β€” the game calculates drops based on the best gear in your inventory and vault. Focus on reaching the soft cap through any activity, then pursue powerful and pinnacle rewards to continue climbing.

The weapon system uses three slots: Kinetic, Energy, and Power. Kinetic weapons deal standard damage, Energy weapons have elemental types (Arc, Solar, Void, Strand, Stasis) that match shields, and Power weapons deal heavy damage using special ammo. Experiment with different weapon types β€” hand cannons, auto rifles, pulse rifles, shotguns, fusion rifles, and more β€” to find what suits your playstyle. Destiny's shooting mechanics are exceptionally refined, making gunplay feel satisfying regardless of which weapon you choose.
